Engine | Cylinder Heads
The efficiency and thus the maximum power and torque potential of any engine is determined by how much air-fuel
mixture is available to the cylinders. On many cars this is restricted by the camshaft design or induction system.
The solution to real performance is not just a hotter camshaft or a bigger intake system, but larger valves and
modified porting. Autotech's solution is the Zylinderkopf. In German it means "Cylinderhead", but here at Autotech
it means SportTuned performance. Performance typical of the flat out German heritage of your watercooled VW.
Our philosophy of using the factory valves wherever possible means you will never be stuck out in the cold if a
replacement should ever be needed. Your local VW Dealer will likely have replacement valves in stock. By using the
high quality OEM replacement valves, we incorporate the proper valve stem lengths. Valves that many companies sell were
originally designed with a longer valve stem for reground cams, and this can cause problems when trying to change camshafts
in the future. Using factory length valves also means you can bolt in a standard factory cam without having the head
disassembled and the valve tips ground!
Many hours of development and testing were spent on the latest head-flow equipment to achieve the optimum in
airflow dynamics. All ports and chambers are matched and polished to a near-perfect configuration. Port sizes are
designed to achieve a balance between maximum air flow (for top-end power) and increased air
velocity at lower engine speeds in order to maintain a flat torque curve. We're proud of the workmanship in our

1.8L 8V Zylinderkopf

Most 1.8L cylinder heads were designed with sufficiently large intake (40mm) and exhaust (33mm) valves to suit most
engines. Our 1.8L heads, offered in either solid or hydraulic valve lifter design, incorporate our exclusive port
configuration to maximize airflow and use the original size 40mm intake and 33mm exhaust valves as used in the GTI.
SportTuned valve springs & titanium valve spring retainers, OE valves, bronze-silicon valve guides, cylinder
head gasket set and either the Euro GTI camshaft for solid lifter heads or the AUTOTECH Sport 270° camshaft
for hydraulic heads are all part of the package. Hydraulic head applications also receive new OE hydraulic lifters.
The Zylinderkopf is shipped completely assembled, ready to install. Zylinderkopf can also be custom configured to
your specifications.

Smallstem Zylinderkopf

This new addition to our Zylinderkopf line is designed to improve low rpm torque and high rpm power over ordinary
performance heads.Based on a hydraulic lifter cylinderhead, the Small Stem Zylinderkopf uses smaller valve stem
diameters instead of increased valve head size to maximize airflow capabilities. The smaller 7mm stems increase airflow without
losing low rpm air velocity common with larger head diameters. Because of this, the Small Stem Zylinderkopf is well suited
for everything from stock 1.8L to built-up 2.1L bottom ends. Special SportTuned 40mm and 33mm valves run in silicone-bronze guides. Our
exclusive port configuration provides optimum airflow without sacraficing drivability. Our precision 3 angle valve
job maximizes airflow while maintaining the durability expected on a street motor. The street-legal AUTOTECH Sport 270°
Hydro Camshaft with our SportTuned valve springs are included. This head is hydraulic lifter only. Not available in a
solid lifter version. Zylinderkopf can also be custom configured to your specifications.

16V Zylinderkopf
Heads with 4 valves per cylinder, by design, flow a lot of air. The large amount of valve area, though, reduces
port velocity at lower engine speeds. It is very important, when modifying these heads, not to go "overboard."
Surprisingly, many Volkswagen 16V head castings have relatively "dirty" air passages from the factory, and show vast
improvements when only subtle porting is performed. Ports that are too large cause big losses of low-rpm power. Our
modifications to the 16V heads concentrate on precision airflow work in the seat areas and a "refining" of the ports.
Includes new silicone-bronze guides, SportTuned valve springs & titanium retainers, and cylinder head gasket
set. Available for both 1.8L and 2.0L heads. Zylinderkopf can also be custom configured to your specifications.
