Volkswagen invested a great deal of engineering in the development of the watercooled motor, making it one of the
finest small car engines available for high performance tuning. You probably already know that an engine is a
complicated system. We offer all of what you need to make your powerplant perform. Because an engine is complicated, it takes
more than just a bunch of parts to make it work right. Choosing what it takes to make it perform correctly is what SportTuning
is all about. Through long experience and personal testing, we have worked at eliminating the frustrations of mediocre
design and bad selection. The performance levels vary to match your demands, or as is often the case, your pocketbook. Since Volkswagen has produced different types of engine and injection designs, updating vehicles varies with the vehicle types.

The 1.8L 20V turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, or "1.8T" as it is affectionately known,
was first installed in a VW in 1998. This incredible motor quickly has become the powerplant
of choice for performance tuning. Like the G60 motor, the 1.8T offers substantial gains in power with simple
bolt-on components. Modifications can be done as follows:
Autotech Q-Chip |
Autotech Intercooler Vent Plate |
Autotech Cold Air Intake or K&N Panel Air Filter |
Autotech SportTuned Stainless Steel Exhaust System |
Autotech SportTuned 2.50" T304 Stainless Steel Downpipe |
Autotech 228mm Lightweight Aluminum or Steel Flywheel/Sachs Clutch Conversion |
Autotech Vernier Cam Timing Gear |
Autotech SportTuned Billet Aluminum Fuel Rail |
Turbocharger/Intercooler Upgrade |

The six cylinder "inline V" engine dubbed the VR6 is an engineering marvel in its own right.
Performance modifications are readily available, but are generally more expensive due to low production volume.
However, what is available can produce substantial gains in both driveability and horsepower. Modifications are
as follows:
Autotech Q-Chip |
Autotech Cold Air Intake or K&N Panel Air Filter |
Autotech SportTuned Stainless Steel Exhaust System |
Autotech Sport 262° VR6 Camshaft Set |
Autotech SportTuned Cylinder Head |
Increased Displacement |
Forced Induction (Turbocharged or Supercharged) |

The Golf and Jetta 3 models feature a long-rod (160mm vs.144mm on earlier 2.0 liters) engine displacing 1984cc. The cross-flow cylinderhead is unique to the U.S. market, and displays great potential for modifications. The upgrades recommended are as follows:
Autotech Q-Chip |
Autotech Cold Air Intake or K&N Panel Air Filter |
Autotech SportTuned Stainless Steel Exhaust System |
Autotech Sport 270° Hydro Camshaft |
Autotech Adjustable Cam Timing Sprocket and Lightweight Intermediate Shaft Pulley |
Autotech SportTuned Cylinder Head |
Increased Displacement |
Forced Induction (Turbocharged or Supercharged) |

The Volkswagen G60 supercharged engine used in the Corrado posesses some of the greatest
potential over all other VW engines for bolt-on performance increases. With relatatively few modifications,
this engine's standard 158hp can be increased substantially. These modifications should be done as follows:
Autotech Q-Chip or Q-Chip/Pulley Package |
K&N Panel Air Filter |
Autotech Sport 260° Hydro Camshaft |
Autotech SportTuned Stainless Steel Exhaust System |
Autotech SportTuned Cylinder Head |
Increased Displacement |

The 16V motors have exceptional top-end power due to their superior airflow capabilities,
but lack low-rpm "oomph." Modifications should be limited to those that increase power without losing precious
bottom-end torque. The updates recommended for the 16V models are as follows:
Autotech SportTuned Exhaust System |
Autotech Tri-Y Header |
K&N Panel Air Filter |
Autotech Power Module for KE-Jetronic; or Autotech Q-Chip for KE-Motronic |
Autotech Sport 16V Camshaft Set |
Autotech Adjustable Cam Timing Sprocket and Lightweight Intermediate Shaft Pulley |
Autotech SportTuned Cylinder Head |
Increased Displacement |
Forced Induction (Turbocharged or Supercharged) |

Volkswagen has made many changes since the first Rabbit (Golf 1) was produced.
On the Golf 2 and Jetta 2, for example, several items were upgraded. The throttle body was enlarged.
High performance distributors are obsolete with the introduction of the Knock-Sensor ignition on the
GTI/GLI and 10.0:1 compression models. The updates recommended for the 8V Golf 2 and Jetta 2
(including GTIand GLI) are:
Autotech SportTuned Exhaust System |
Autotech Tri-Y Header (high-flow cat if applicable) |
K&N Panel Air Filter |
Autotech Power Module for KE-Jetronic |
Autotech Sport 270° Hydro Camshaft |
Autotech Adjustable Cam Timing Sprocket and Lightweight Intermediate Shaft Pulley |
European-spec Distributor (8.5:1 models); or Ignition Timing 12 degrees BTDC (10.0:1 CIS models) |
Autotech SportTuned Cylinder Head |
Increased Displacement and Compression |
Forced Induction (Turbocharged or Supercharged) |

The early vehicles, such
as the Rabbit, Scirocco, Jetta 1, and
Cabriolet, are usually tuned for increased
performance by adding parts in the
following order:
Autotech SportTuned Exhaust
System
Autotech SportTuned Downpipe or Tri-Y
Header
K&N Panel Air
Filter
Big Bore Throttle Body
Autotech European GTI Camshaft
(Valve Springs, if
req.)
Autotech Adjustable Cam Timing
Sprocket and Lightweight
Intermediate Shaft
Pulley
European-spec
Distributor
Autotech SportTuned Cylinder
Head
Increased Displacement and
Compression
Forced Induction (Turbocharged or
Supercharged)
This recommended list of modifications
is very basic and is by no means
complete. It is limited only by your
imagination and desire for performance and
power. Newly developed products to
increase performance are sure to become
available as well.
